What a treat is a decent feed close to home? Local Pizza is making the finest wood fired pizza, deep into the other side of the flannelette curtain.
Local Pizza is a suburban grotto, all mood-lighting and rustic timber finishes. Not far from MONA, it faces the Derwent River and is just off the bike track.
The locals are lucky with pizzas of ‘hand stretched dough, crafted with love’ just at their doorstep. Local Pizza is also another reason to travel north if you don’t already enjoy the benefits of living nearby.
The Two Girls took the family gaggle and went pizza crazy. Pizzas come in one-size and are mostly $20 each. They remind me of pizza eaten in New York, thin crisp crusts and sparsely topped. You fully appreciate the pizza in its entirety – base, sauce, cheese and your chosen toppings. Depending on your pizza addiction, you could probably share. We didn’t. There was a ridiculous amount of pizza everywhere. The couple of slices that got the better of us where swiftly boxed for our departure.
On the table was the Marg (arita), the BBQ Bird, Ballin’ (meatballs of beef, pork and porcini mushrooms), Bonza (genius marketing, I’d never have ordered it if they’d called it Australiana), Americano and garlic.
This is no new-age pizza place – Piri Piri and Tandori lovers will need to go elsewhere. These pizzas draw on tradition and fine ingredients to produce a quality product with a sense of humour. Why not try ‘White Guy’ with zucchini, cream base, garlic, parsley, gorgonzola, parmesan and mozzarella or for seafood lovers, ‘Legalise (marinara)’ with whole Spring Bag mussels, prawns, garlic, parsley, parmesan and mozzarella.
Silly-full, we had dessert anyway. There are $4 scoops of their gelatos and special icecream blends – Tasmanian Valhalla with ingenious additions – Oreos for the Oreo-obsessed ‘I’m the arty one’ and Redskin flavoured for Skater-boy. I had the $5 bowl of Tiramisu.
It was a ripper of a night out. Everyone tucked into their pizzas, talked and laughed. The gaggle declared it an excellent choice and damn fine pizza.
Local Pizza has the seal of approval from the Two Girls, and importantly, from ‘I’m the arty one’ and Skater-boy.
