The weekend has been
awash with food reviews thanks to the release of Gourmet Traveller’s ‘2016 Australian Restaurant Guide’ AND The Australian Weekend ‘Hot 50
As a food destination,
Tasmania has only ever enjoyed modest recognition in these culinary wrap-ups.
This year’s no different, but the consensus is that relative new comer,
Franklin, is Tasmania’s star on the national epicurean stage. It is in the company of
some impressive names in The Australian, and it has ranked number 35 nationally by Gourmet
Traveller, ‘..a big win for Hobart’ and a two star rating, otherwise known
as ‘..a genuine dining experience, and worthy of a detour.’
We’re impressed by Chef,
David Moyle too. The sea is the star attraction on his menu. For a state
surrounded by water, Moyle plays homage to place by his choices. Read our post,

Hobart’s most recent
addition, and peer to Franklin in The Australian Weekend is The Glass House. At the end of the Brooke Street is floor to ceiling
glass. Inside is a bar and restaurant of impeccable quality like the Murano
glass that lines its entrance. The Glass House is a destination. The Two Girls
expect to see it listed more prominently than one of our best bars (although it

A big fan of GT, This
Girl has been collecting since 1998. The annual restaurant guide is my bible
for shortlisting restaurants for interstate visits. And I've always had a
keen interest in how they rate my hometown too. Here’s the list of what got noticed
by the GT team this year and a link to our blog post if we’ve reviewed them.
Restaurants are listed according to how they rate in the guide. Apart from
Franklin, there are no other top 100 restaurants, but you’ll find them in order
of the quality of their wine list and the presence of good vegetarian options –
the scale used for all listings in the guide.

There’s no surprises
- Me Wah, Sandy Bay –
here’s when we went for Yum Cha. Me Wah is not short an accolade either, here’s

- West Pumphouse – we’ve
found to be hit and miss. For a restaurant, we prefer it as a bar. Here’s our

- Lebrina – who ALWAYS
gets a nod in GT’s annual –It’s been years since I’ve eaten there. It must be time to go back.

Black Cow Bistro and
the remarkable, Stillwater, a regular in the annual GT list, get a mention for
notable regional eating.
The GT guide also
points you in the direction of best cafes, best cheap eats, best bars and more
on regional options. It’s definitely worth a look and a serious resource for a
national food tour.
